The Chilean singer paid a visit to ES Música during her stay in New York. There, we got to hear exclusive details about her current project…an Artist In Residence program, which basically provides her (and a few other artists in Los Angeles) with space to work, create and mold her debut album as a soloist. Pilar has come a long way musically since her days with Los Abandoned. She’s clearly experimenting with her folkloric upbringing by adding the industrious sounds of her hometown (Van Nuys, CA).
The growth of the Latin Alternative Music Conference was never more evident that at last month’s gathering of musicians and industry insiders. Rock, as always, was well-represented with groups like Don Tetto (Colombia), Guajiro (Miami) and Plastilina Mosh (Mexico). Fans of singer-songwriters got a night devoted exclusively to them, with acoustic performances at S.O.B’s from Chana (Los Angeles), Emmanuel Horvilleur (Argentina), Francisca Valenzuela (Chile), Alex Cuba (Canada) and others.
But the key word at the 9th annual conference was “hybrid”. Perhaps more present than ever were musicians whose cross-cultural influences are vast and diverse. We got to hear new, cutting-edge sounds from Pilar Diaz (formerly of Los Abandoned), Zigmat (Brooklyn), Ximena Sariñana, Los Fancy Free, DJ Bitman and many more.
Bogotá, Colombia has seen Don Tetto grow up right before its eyes. The punk quartet formed in 2003 and played the festival circuit for over 3 years, until they landed a coveted spot at Rock Al Parque in 2006. Things have been moving pretty fast for them ever since. Their 2007 debut album, Lo Que No Sabias, put them squarely on the map as rock’s next big thing. And this past July in New York marked their debut on U.S. soil.
Check out our feature and see why Don Tetto is our ARTIST OF THE MONTH for August, 2008.
One of the premiere party bands in the world has managed to pack their experiences from endless globe-trotting into another great album. New York City is the band’s third, filled with color, texture, pulsing beats and eerily romantic vocals from Sabina. In other words, it’s just another captivating chapter in the history of Brazilian Girls.
We got a chance to sit down with them before their big concert in Brooklyn. Check out what they had to say about their most contemplative record yet.
